Our Sunshine Coast Bears

The entire Sunshine Coast is home to a variety of wildlife including our black bears. Our coast bears can be found from the water’s edge to the top of Mount Elphinstone, from West Howe Sound through to Egmont and beyond. Our black bears live where we live and may roam through areas we frequent such as hiking trails, campsites, or in our own backyards.

The goal of our alliance is to reduce negative human-bear encounters by fostering a pragmatic understanding and appreciation of our bears so that residents, bears and visitors can have a safe and respectful coexistence.

“We are at a time in our earth’s history when the future of bears and other animals now depends on our ability to demonstrate mercy, restraint and reserve. This can only begin when we have learned to master our own fear. Learning to understand bears would be a good start.
— Kevin Van Tighem

Properly managing BEAR attractants will reduce negative encounters and any unnecessary deaths of our resident bears.
